Tempted to use a traditional builder for your accessible home project? We explain the importance of using specialist construction services – and why.
From accessible extensions and conversions to full new builds, the success of any adapted property project hinges on two key elements. These are thoughtful, inclusive design and expert construction.
We take the view that it is not just about designing and building homes – our role is to build confidence by increasing independence. As specialists in accessible and adapted property works, it is vital to understand that no two clients are the same, and that careful consideration of individual needs is critical at every stage. This is not something a generalist builder can always offer.
Why Choosing a Specialist Builder Matters
Commissioning a non-specialist construction company may seem like a cost-saving move. However, it often results in missed details, poor functionality, and costly rectification works down the line. Here’s why working with a specialist provider is so important.
Unique Understanding of Disability Needs
While we are not medical professionals, we are construction specialists with lived experience, working with technical and clinical guidance in mind. From turning circles to shower access, it’s the details that make a home truly functional.
Knowledge of Funding Mechanisms
A conventional construction company will not be familiar with delivering projects in line DFG funding requirements. Our team has a thorough understanding of Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) processes and how to best support your DFG Trusted Agent. We are also highly experienced in working collaboratively with solicitors, court appointed deputies, occupational therapists and case managers. Find out more about Who We Work With >

Technical Accessibility Expertise
The majority of traditional building firms have little or no knowledge of the latest accessibility requirements and standards. A specialist design and build contractor will know how to build for long-term durability while ensuring everything meets accessibility standards, such as M4(3) compliance.
The Freedom team may also go beyond the M4(3) requirements if the situation requires it. For example, we may exceed the standard 1800mm turning circles if it allows for better space planning and circulation. And we always install Zero thresholds, even if we are not working to M4(3). We have a client that is not a wheelchair user but does have limited vision. Technically, a standard threshold would be acceptable for this person, but we feel it creates a much better living environment, preventing potential trips and falls.

Integrating Smart, Safe Smarthome Solutions
Another area where conventional building companies fall short is lack of experience and knowledge when it comes to Smarthome technology. We recommend and install assistive technology, automated controls and safety features that can significantly enhance a person’s independence. We keep aligned with the ever expanding world of technology so that we can bring independence to the forefront of what we do. Explore our Guide to Assistive Technology in the home to find out more.
Strong Relationships with Specialist Suppliers
We work with a wide range of specialist suppliers, contractors and trusted tradespeople whose experience aligns with ours in delivering projects to the highest standards. Company’s such as Geberit and CareSpaces allow us to have all the information and dimensions on equipment, right at the beginning in the feasibility and design stage. It allows us to know we are providing the right design, as well as the build.
Avoiding Costly Design and Construction Mistakes
Our team foresees issues that general builders may not be aware of – from structural reinforcements for ceiling track hoists to appropriate gradient and drainage for level access wet rooms. We also look at how we can futureproof at the time of the build, to avoid more work and inconvenience in the future -having to move out of an accessible property, for a further remodel down the line is not an easy task, as well as creating further cost implications.
Don’t Compromise on Construction
Even the most thoughtful design can fall short if it isn’t built with specialist understanding. That’s why our construction services are a vital part of what we offer. Whether we’re working from our own designs or stepping in to value-engineered projects drawn up by architects, our priority is always the same – to deliver safe, future-proof, and cost-effective solutions that meet real-life needs.
If you’re planning an adaptation or accessible new build, don’t compromise on quality. Choose a team who understands what truly makes a space accessible, and who knows how to bring that vision to life.
Whether you are looking to commission a design and build project or need specialist construction services to deliver you adapted property project correctly, please get in touch. The Freedom team will be happy to discuss your needs and identify how to deliver best value for your budget.
