Modern bespoke disability adapted bungalow. A sustainably-designed accessible house with wood cladding and solar panels
Quotation Marks

This house is so important to rebuilding our family. After far too long apart, we will all be reunited under one roof whilst having that separation of areas, which is crucial to ensure all and everyone’s needs are met. We then have the heart of the home being central and bringing us all together.

Project Description

An existing property was demolished to make way for a bespoke accessible new build house designed to meet a family’s specific needs. The custom-designed property comprises the accessible main family living areas, as well as an independent mobility-adapted apartment. External garden works include an inclusive social entertaining area – and an outbuilding with a fully accessible pub!

Meeting the Design Brief
This family had been living apart due to an accident that left one member wheelchair-bound and unable to access the family home. The primary focus of our brief was to reunite the family whilst maintaining our client’s independence. All necessary equipment and adapted areas have been thoughtfully designed and installed to suit their needs both now and in the future.

Our experienced design team worked closely with the clients, to create the perfect accessible new build house for the available budget. Bespoke interior design features include a luxury wet room with custom black ceiling track hoist system.

Throughout the process, we worked closely with the client and their family, ensuring that both the individual needs of the wheelchair user and the wider family were considered. A dedicated WhatsApp group was set up to allow open communication and collaborative input on every aspect of the design.

Perfectly Adapted by Design
Freedom Living Solutions was appointed as the Principle Designer and Main Contractor on this project, overseeing every stage from design to completion. Our in-house Design Team reworked the original architect’s proposal to create a home that allowed the family to live comfortably together, while also supporting the wheelchair user’s independence.

We managed all aspects of the redesign, space planning and room layout; including the specifically adapted areas such as the wet room and therapy room. The design team also prepared all planning documentation required for approval.

The client provided a great deal of input on styling, enabling the biophilic interior designer to apply the finishing decorative touches. A consultant OT and care equipment provider were appointed for guidance on the installation of specialist equipment, ensuring the best possible outcome for the client.

Sustainable Construction
The bungalow was sustainably designed and constructed using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), which helped reduce material waste and improve energy efficiency during the build. It features roof-mounted PV solar panels and a Passivent ventilation system, both of which support long-term energy savings and low-carbon living.

The main build was completed and handed over to the home owners in July 2024.
