Design is now underway for a disability-adapted home in East Sussex. For us, this project highlights why the Consultation and Design stage is so crucial to success. This early stage determines how the home will support independence, safety and family life.
From Temporary Access to Permanent Adaptation
Earlier this year, we installed temporary ramps at the family’s temporary rental property in Henfield, West Sussex. This provided immediate access while long-term plans progressed.
However, our involvement started before the property purchase. We supported the family at pre-purchase stage, assessing suitability for adaptation.
Selecting the right property is essential for safe and cost-effective accessible design. Once purchased, the detailed design phase began.
Remodelling for Accessibility, Care and Daily Living
The existing single-storey property is being fully remodelled into a disability-adapted home. The design focuses on mobility, care provision and long-term progression.
Key features include:
- Level access throughout the home and accessible patio area.
- Widened doorways to improve wheelchair circulation.
- A new wheelchair ramp for safe and dignified entry.
- New extension forming an open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining space.
- Inclusive family area designed for shared living.
- Spacious adapted bedroom created from the former bedroom and kitchen
- Large wet room with generous turning and transfer space.
- Ceiling hoist track system across personal and shared zones.
- Conversion of the study into a carer bedroom with en-suite.
- Dedicated storage for hygiene equipment and medical supplies.
- Conversion of the existing bathroom into an additional accessible wet room.
Each element has been considered in relation to safe transfers, equipment use and future adaptability.
Collaborative Design with the Family and Occupational Therapist
Accessible home design should be clinically informed and person-centred. Throughout this phase, we are working closely with the family, as well as their Occupational Therapist and court-appointed Deputy.
The Occupational Therapist provides essential guidance on mobility, transfers and equipment specification. We review circulation space, hoist coverage and safe transfer zones in detail. We also consider privacy, dignity and family interaction.
By combining clinical insight with lived experience, we create practical, future-proof solutions. This ensures the property supports both independence and evolving care needs.
Once the final design is approved, Freedom Living Solutions will be tendering to undertake the construction and adaptation works.
